Im September schreibt der Schriftsteller einen Weblog aus Ramallah. Themen: Orientalismus, rf.: Said, Edward: Orientalismus. 1978. ISBN 3596122406, und Interviews. Wie ist der Orient zum Orient geworden? Der Orient ist eine Konstruktion, eine durch die Wissenschaft instrumentalisierte westliche Phantasie, ein Bild, welches produziert ist, um eine vermeintliche Wahrheit und Macht zu beschreiben. Festgelegte Dichotomien konstruieren den gebildeten, zivilisierten, kontrollierten Westen im Gegensatz zum ungebildeten, barbarischen, mit sinnlichen Phantasien behafteten Orient. Wie legitim ist das Interesse fuer " Andere", in einem vom Corpus des Wissens im Okzidentalismus homogenisierten " Westen"? " In a related polemic against " Orientalism" Edward Said ( 1978) identifies persistent tropes by which Europeans and Americans have visualized Eastern and Arab cultures. The Orient functions as a theater, a stage on which a performance is repeated, to be seen from a privileged standpoint. ( Barthes [ 1977] locates a similar " perspective" in the emerging bourgeois esthetics of Diderot.) For Said, the Orient is " textualized"; its multiple, divergent stories and existential predicaments are coherently woven as a body of signs suspectible of virtuoso reading. This Orient, occulted and fragile, is brought lovingly to light, salvaged in the work of the outside scholar.
